20 facts about the Polish state language exam

  • The exam is held 3 times a year in different cities in Poland and abroad.

In 2019, the exam will be held on the following dates: 9-10 March, 15-16 June, 23-24 November.

  • The examination is intended not only for foreigners, but also for Polish citizens who live abroad.
  • The exam is open to adults (18 years of age or older) as well as children and teenagers.
  • The state commission conducting the exam publishes each year a list of specialised venues (usually educational institutions) where the exam will be held.

In Wrocław, the state examination for the Polish language takes place at the University of Wrocław.

  • In 2019, the examination fees are set according to the level of qualification for adults: level A1, A2 is 120 euros (approx. PLN 516); level B1 and B2 is 150 euros (approx. PLN 645); level C1 and C2 is 180 euros (approx. PLN 774). For groups consisting of children and adolescents (14-17 years old), the fee is set at EUR 90 (approx. PLN 387) for qualifications A1 to B2.

Tip: Don't round up the amount you transfer.

  • Exam fees must be paid no later than 3 days from the date of application.

Please note that in the title of the payment you need to specify the candidate's first name, last name, write the words "Egzamin" and specify the level of language knowledge you plan to confirm (from A1 to C2), then specify the date of the exam. Here is how it should look like: "Jan Nowak, egzamin B1, 9-10.03.2019".

  • A1, A2 level certifications are not available right now.

It is worth noting that the information is available on the official website and it is possible that certification will be resumed. Follow the news on the official website of the State Commission.

  • The examination consists of a written and an oral part.
  • The examination papers are checked by an impartial committee of 71 members.
  • A successful exam is at least 60% correct answers (i.e. 24 out of 40) in each section of the exam.
  • The official website dedicated to the exam provides a list of recommended reading for preparation.
  • Each year, the exam tasks change.
  • It is not recommended that you write your answers in block letters. However, those with illegible handwriting should be more careful. If the examiner cannot make out the written word, it will deprive you of a precious point.
  • You cannot take notebooks, notebooks or even just blank sheets of paper to the exam - you may be disqualified.
  • When taking the test, don't forget the diacritical marks! Every lost character is a minus point!

Write correctly: ł, ż, ź, ń, ą, ę, ó, ś, ć

  • A retake is only allowed after one year.
  • If you do not agree with the results of the examination, you may appeal within 21 days of the results being announced.
  • The fee for issuing the certificate is 20 euros (approx. 86 PLN).
  • The certificate you will receive after successfully passing the exam is the only state document proving your knowledge of the Polish language.
  • A state certificate confirming your language skills can be obtained without taking an exam. It is issued to those who have graduated from an educational institution in Poland (check the website for more information).
