Dawno dawno temu (Long ago), w Kruszwicy nad jeziorem Gopło (in Kruszwice on Lake Gopło) w zamku (in a castle) żył książę Popiel (Prince Popiel lived) wraz z żoną (and his wife), niemiecką księżniczką (German princess). Oboje lubili zabawę (They both liked to amuse themselves), nie dbali zaś o swoich poddanych (and did not care for their charges). Swoimstryjom (To their uncles), rycerzom wielkopolskim (Knights of Great Poland) Popiel przysparzał przez to samych zmartwień (Popiel caused a lot of trouble as a result). Ostrzegali go (They warned him), że powinien zająć się (that he should take care) swoimi włościami (of his estates), on jednak ich nie słuchał (but he did not listen to them). Czas spędzał (He spent his time) z żoną na polowaniach (hunting with his wife), nie interesując się sprawami poddanych (not caring about his subjects), ani stanem murów (not about the state of the walls) chroniących osadę (protecting the settlement) przed najazdami barbarzyńskich plemion (from the invasions of barbarian tribes).
Zła księżna (Angry duchess), zdenerwowana nagabywaniami stryjów Popiela (upset by Uncle Popiela's nagging) doradziła mu, by wyprawić ucztę (advised him to organise a feast), zaprosić na nią wszystkich stryjów (invite all the uncles to it) i wlać im dowina truciznę (and pour poison into the wine). Tak zrobili (They did so) - gdy stryjowie przybyli naucztę (when the uncles came to the feast) i wznieśli toast (and made a toast), po chwili padli nieżywi napodłogę (then after a while they fell dead on the floor). Nocą księżna kazała służbie (At night the duchess ordered the servants) wrzucić ciała do jeziora (throw the bodies into the lake). Była pewna (She was sure), że nikt nie dowie się, co się stało (that no one would find out what had happened).
Po kilku dniach (After a few days) wokół zamku zaczęły gromadzić się myszy (mice began to gather around the castle). Every hour było ich więcej (every hour): wdarły się do środka (they crawled inside), a ich popiskiwaniewkrótce (and soon their squeaks) słychać było w każdej izbie zamku (could be heard in every room of the castle). Popiel wraz z żoną (Popiel and his wife) przeprawił się na wyspę na jeziorze (they crossed to an island in the lake) i schronił w starej wieży (and took refuge in the old tower).
Myszy popłynęły za nimi (The mice swam after them). Przegryzły dno łodzi (They gnawed the bottom of the boat), by nikt nie mógł już (so that nobody could) nią uciec z wyspy (escape from the island on it). Wdrapały się na wieżę (They climbed the tower), rzuciły na Popiela i jego żonę (threw themselves on Popiela and his wife), a następnie pożarły (and then devoured them). Stara wieża (Old Tower) do dziś stoi nad jeziorem Gopło (and today stands on Lake Gopło) - by nikt nie zapomniał o karze (so that no one forgets about the punishment), jaka spotkała niegodziwe małżeństwo (befell the evil couple), nazwano ją Mysią Wieżą (it was called the Mouse Tower).
