In December, it is customary to sum up the results and give gifts
This month is associated with the name of Saint Nicholas, whom the Catholic world remembers on December 6. Saint Nicholas's kindness to suffering people gave rise to the tradition of giving gifts on the night of December 5-6.
In Poland, the first mention of gifts on St. Nicholas Day (in Polish, Mikołajki) dates back to the 18th century. At that time, gifts were modest. Obedient children received apples, nuts, gingerbread, and naughty ones were left without a gift. This made the pranksters think and correct themselves by the next visit of St. Nicholas. There was not long to wait - until December 24.
The Polish language school Litera, like St. Nicholas, helps and supports those in need
Over the five years of our work, we have developed a good tradition of holding charity events and marathons in December. This year, Litera invites you to do a good deed.
We have announced a fundraiser to pay for Polish language courses for refugees. Perhaps your 1-5 zlotys will help someone change their life.
The proceeds from the collection will go towards funding education for refugees. We will use the funds raised to pay teachers and prepare course materials.
The Litera team believes that learning a language will help you gain confidence in a new country, and our school will become a place for meetings and acquaintances. Every refugee will receive support here and will start speaking correctly after the first lessons.
We already have experience working with refugees. In March 2022, we held our first free classes for adults. In the new year, we plan to open groups for young people and adults, and hold our regular conversation club on Fridays.
