National symbols of Poland: coat of arms and flag

The symbols of a country are very important to every state ☝

They contain the history, traditions and culture of the people. You need to know the symbols: their history, image and meaning if you plan to become a resident of this country. You will not be able to obtain permanent residence, citizenship or a Pole card without knowing the main symbols of Poland.

Poles are proud of the Polish anthem, flag and, of course, coat of arms. The latter is considered one of the oldest in Europe, and of course, there is a legend about its origin. But we will tell it a little later.

First, take a closer look at the flag of Poland 🇵🇱

It is two equal horizontal stripes: white with an eagle on top and red on the bottom. It is an official flag used only abroad. There is no coat of arms on the territory of the state on this symbol.
White symbolises purity of thoughts, purity of spirit, and red symbolises masculinity, military valour and strength.

✍For those who are preparing for the language exam, the description of the flag in Polish is "Polska Flaga składa się z dwóch kolorów: czerwony jest na dole, biały jest na górze".

Now it is the turn to tell about the coat of arms of the Polish Republic

It is an image of a white single-headed eagle with spread wings. The head is turned to the right and crowned with a golden crown with three prongs. The beak, claws and tongue of the eagle are traditionally coloured in gold. Each feather of the bird is outlined with a thin black contour. The eagle is located on a red shield, tapering to the bottom. The coat of arms is officially approved in Article 28 of the Constitution of the country, adopted in 1997.

✍For those preparing for the language exam, the description of the coat of arms in Polish is "Biały orzeł na czerwonym tle ze złotą koroną"

☝The Polish coat of arms is one of the oldest in Europe. The first official mention dates back to 1295. Throughout history, rulers, kings and dynasties have changed, but the coat of arms has remained virtually unchanged. It was still depicted as a straight red heraldic shield with a white eagle in the centre.

Legend

According to legend, the eagle on the coat of arms appeared long before it was officially mentioned thanks to Lech, the forefather of the Polish nation. When the Slavic princes Lech, Rus and Czech were looking for a territory where they could settle, Lech saw an eagle. In the rays of the setting sun, the bird was soaring over the oak tree where it had made its nest. This sight so impressed the prince that it was here that he decided to found a city, which he named Gniezny (meaning nest). It was the first capital of the Polish state.

Our days

☝Nowadays, the coat of arms of Poland combines the aspiration of the Polish people for development and respect for the memory of their ancestors and their history. Only once has the coat of arms of Poland been changed. This was after the Communist Party came to power in the 20th century. Then the crown as a symbol of royal power disappeared from the eagle's head. But even this fact the Polish people can be proud of. After all, only Poland did not adapt its own coat of arms to the socialist ones, but only slightly modified it. And only in 1989 the coat of arms received its original appearance. A red heraldic shield, and on it a white eagle with a royal crown.

🤓Your knowledge of heraldry can be useful for examinations and for obtaining a Polish card.
