PIT or how to get a refund

Have you received an unknown piece of paper from your employer - PIT-11 and don’t know what to do with it?

So, let's begin.

PIT is the name of the tax declaration in Poland.

How to complete and submit a PIT:
1. First, you must receive PIT-11 by the end of February. It is issued to you personally by your employer or sent by mail to the address you indicated when you were hired;

2. You receive a PIT-11, then fill out a PIT-37 and submit it to Urząd Skarbowy. If you worked more than one job during the year, you receive a PIT-11 from each employer, BUT you fill out and submit one PIT-37 declaration;

3. This can be done in paper form (download a sample PITa and fill it in manually), but this option is closer to people who know and have been doing this for years. It would be better to use programs that help in calculating, filling in and sending PIT. One of such programs is e-pity.pl - this is the official site where you can download the program.

4. So, download, install, put in front of you all your PIT-11 for 2017 (if you worked for more than one employer) and let's get started:
- Select KREATOR mode;
- Method of taxation (sposób opodatkowania) - individually, together with your spouse, etc. If you do not have a wife and children, choose "indywidualnie". Mark "zlożenie zeznania" and click Next;
• At this stage, fill in personal data. You can simply copy it from PIT-11;
- Next, fill in the information about the income received for the year "Przychody podatnika". To do this, select on the basis of what - in our case PIT-11.
• A page identical to PIT-11 will open, and simply rewrite the numbers according to the cells. In the case of “umowa zlecenia” and “umowa o dzielo”, check the box “nic nie zostalo zaznaczone”, and in the case of “umowy o prace”, select in accordance with Part D in PIT-11. And if you have several PIT-11, then fill in each one separately.
• The next step is the “Ulgi I odliczenia” benefits. There are many tax benefits in Poland, for example, from raising a child, from Internet fees, from donating blood, public transport (with “umowie i pracę”) and so on. If you want, read it, if not, then click Next.
• We are asked to transfer 1% from the tax to charity, the program itself selects the organization or you can specify the details of the organization you would like to help, click Next.

That's all!?

You can review your completed return, print it out, or save it as a pdf file. The PIT-37 has all the information about your income, the amount of tax paid and the amount of your refund or the amount you still have to pay.

The money will be returned within 3 months in two ways: by postal order to the address you provided or by transfer to a bank account, but for this you need to fill out the ZAP-3 form and take it to Urząd Skarbowy.
If you have an underpayment of taxes, you must pay this amount before April 30! You can pay at the cash desk of the tax office where the declaration is submitted, or make a transfer to the account number of this institution.

5. You have already calculated and filled out your declaration, all that remains is to send it to the tax office. This can be done in two ways:
• Print the declaration in two copies, sign it and take it to the tax office at your place of residence (the address will be on the declaration). After your declaration is accepted and assigned a number, you will receive a second copy with the signatures and seals of the inspection. It must be kept for 5 years.
• The second way is to send the declaration electronically, which is obviously much more convenient and faster. For this, select the line at the last stage - "Chcę wyslać e-Deklaracje", enter the amount of income received for 2017 (with PIT-37 for 2017) for your identification, if any. If you have not previously worked in Poland and have not filed a declaration, then enter 0 and enter the e-mail address to which you will receive UPO (Urzedowe Poswiadczenie Odbioru) - Confirmation of acceptance of your declaration and assignment of an identification number to it. Send it. After that, print out the declaration with the assigned number and UPO, which must also be kept for 5 years. A declaration sent electronically is invalid without UPO.

That's it! You've filed your tax return. Congratulations!
