On December 6, Poland celebrates St. Nicholas Day (Dzień Świętego Mikołaja) or Mikołajki (Mikołajki)
Traditionally, on this day all children expect surprises from St. Nicholas. Usually these are sweets, tangerines and gilded nuts.
Saint Nicholas has 31 hours to deliver gifts to all obedient children. Why 31 and not 24? The answer is very simple - the wizard is in service and there is a time difference.
Scientists have calculated that St. Nicholas has only milliseconds to throw gifts to good children, and sticks or coal to the ill-mannered and spoiled ones.
Usually St. Nicholas leaves a surprise under the Christmas tree or in a specially left sock. However, in some regions of Poland, children find gifts under the pillow.
The magical atmosphere does not leave adults indifferent either. They give each other small gifts and exchange wishes. Most often, Polish residents do this in person or send holiday cards by mail, and also send messages to loved ones. Wishes said from the heart are the best gift. This is proof of love and friendship.
