When you are travelling to different countries and want to shine in the local language, it is enough to learn a few words and expressions. Then, of course, you don't need to learn the whole grammatical system of a foreign language.
Children, especially young children, who communicate in a new language environment, learn it without apparent effort. After a short time, they begin to speak the foreign language without accent or mistakes. All this despite the fact that no one teaches them grammatical rules. Unfortunately, the older a person gets, the more difficult it is for him to learn foreign languages. Mastering grammar requires patience. But, undoubtedly, the efforts will bear fruit over time. It is very important to try to grasp the whole structure of a given language. It is important to look at it as a whole, because a piecemeal study of the rules will not give the desired result.
Think back to how often you have received a "jagged" text when using an online translator. You can do an experiment. Take a sentence in Polish and translate it verbatim using a dictionary. You will be surprised at the result. The meaning of the sentence can be distorted beyond recognition. This situation occurs when you make a translation without paying attention to the various semantic variants of words, their combination, and formal grammatical requirements.
It is possible to understand ready-made tests in a foreign language well, but have serious problems speaking it or creating written texts. The gap between passive and active language knowledge is typical for those who learn a language on their own. It is also a frequent phenomenon for Slavic students who come to study Polish at our Centre. The closeness and kinship of the Slavic languages makes it easier to understand, but unfortunately, "understand" does not mean "know how to". Without a good knowledge of the grammatical structure of the language, you cannot learn to speak Polish correctly. Of course, you can only use simple and short sentences in your speech.
